| Exploring the Greek islands is a must-do for anyone visiting the idyllic locations of the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts. Here are some insights into Rhodes to help with your planning of a perfect Greek island hopping itinerary.
What do you like most about Rhodes? I love that the sun shines all day, every day! I like that you can explore the whole island as it’s not too big. Which foods should I try when visiting Rhodes? You must try a traditional Greek salad, the vegetables are so fresh and juicy and eating in the sun makes everything taste better. I don’t really like olives, but when I’m in Greece I seem to forget this as they taste delicious! Traditional Greek dishes such as stuffed vine leaves, souvlaki and Moussaka are very tasty. Are there any restaurants in particular that you’d recommend? In Lindos go for a roof-top tavern for lunch as you will get lovely views and a breeze if you are lucky. There are many of these type of restaurants and we always go for the ones with traditional Greek food on their menus. What are your favourite activities in Rhodes? It’s great to go on a day cruise from Rhodes harbour. There are many boats to choose from; big and small. We had a memorable lazy day cruise with Captain Stergios on his small wooden boat. Sunbathing at the front of the boat was great. Such a feeling of freedom! What should I go and see in Rhodes? It really is worth hiring a car for a couple of days and exploring the interior of the island. There are magnificent mountains, crazy hair-pin bends, miles of olive groves and unspoilt villages. Our hire car was a tiny Daewoo and my partner is 6 feet 2, we still laugh about it now. Where are the best beaches? Prasonisi is a must if you are into your water sports. The Cape of Prasonisi is right at the southern tip of the island and you can get a bus or drive down by car. There is a strip of sand that connects prasonisi to the main island, on one side there are always waves for wind-surfing and kite-surfing and on the other side it is completely calm. Another beautiful beach which is off the beaten track is Fourni. You need a car to reach it and you go down a steep track with hair-pins bends. We had the beach to ourselves and sat in the crashing waves giggling our heads off. Which hotels would you recommend? I can highly recommend The Lindos Mare Hotel just outside Lindos. The level of service is one of the best I’ve experienced and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. We spent many happy hours by the pool. The food was excellent. Do you have a favourite historical site? The Acropolis at Lindos is a wonderful site to visit, with stunning views down to St. Paul’s Bay from the top. We’ve been twice and have identical photos taken 7 years apart. It is quite a climb up to the top and you need to wear good footwear, I wouldn’t recommend flip-flops. You get a sense of history as if you are walking in the footsteps of the ancient Greeks. Whats the best way to discover Rhodes? The best way to discover Rhodes is to make it part of a Greek Islands tour, or maybe added to a Turkey gulet cruise holiday, for maximum diversity and adventure. If you had to sum up Rhodes in one word, what would it be? Romantic. Visit |
